Abstract

Adolescent health risk behaviours, especially smoking and drinking, create a cause for concern worldwide. These forms of behaviour show close relationships with adolescents’ mental health and well-being. The aim of the current study has been to explore these associations in a sample of Hungarian adolescents, with a special emphasis on the protective role of mental well-being. The study was based on a cross-sectional survey in which 276 adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years were the participants in the region of South-Pest. The data collection took place between 2021 and 2022 and involved questions on smoking and drinking as well as the EPOCH-H Adolescent Psychological Well-Being Scale and the SDQ Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. During data analysis, descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression analyses were applied. Gender differences were not detected either in frequencies of smoking or drinking, although variations could be justified in terms of the well-being indicators, strengths and difficulties according to gender. Findings highlight that psychological well-being and health risk behaviours are linked. Based on the results, we can conclude that whereas difficulties and problem behaviours can increase, higher levels of well-being may decrease the likelihood of health risk behaviours. These findings can indirectly support the development of preventive interventions.
